EU AI Act timeline and effective dates for U.S. companies
The AI Act entered into force on 1 August 2024 and reached its general date of application on 2 August 2026, with important rules applying earlier and high-risk obligations applying later in 2027 and 2028.

There is no single date. Prohibited-practice and AI-literacy rules began applying on 2 February 2025; GPAI/governance rules on 2 August 2025; the general application date was 2 August 2026; Annex III high-risk rules apply from 2 December 2027; and Article 6(1)/Annex I product-linked high-risk rules apply from 2 August 2028.

The current implementation sequence
AI Act enters into force
Regulation (EU) 2024/1689 entered into force on 1 August 2024, twenty days after publication in the Official Journal.
Chapters I and II begin applying
This includes the AI literacy framework and prohibited-practice rules, subject to the specific 2026 amendments and exceptions introduced by Regulation (EU) 2026/1744.
GPAI obligations
General-purpose AI model provider obligations begin applying, including documentation, downstream information, copyright-policy and training-content-summary duties.
Digital Omnibus on AI enters into force
Regulation (EU) 2026/1744 amends the AI Act, including Article 4 and the high-risk implementation timetable.
Article 50 applies
Transparency obligations for specified AI interactions and AI-generated or manipulated content apply. The Commission and national authorities begin broader enforcement of applicable rules.
GPAI evaluation procedures enter into force
Commission Implementing Regulation (EU) 2026/1755 enters into force, detailing Article 92 GPAI model evaluations and procedural safeguards for Article 101 fine proceedings.
Two important transitions
Certain additional prohibited-practice provisions introduced by the 2026 amendment begin applying, and pre-2-August-2026 generative systems must meet Article 50(2) marking/detection duties by this date.
Annex III high-risk systems
Chapter III Sections 1–3 apply to systems classified high-risk under Article 6(2) and Annex III.
Annex I / product-linked high-risk systems
The corresponding Chapter III high-risk rules apply to systems classified under Article 6(1) and Annex I.

Do not interpret later high-risk dates as permission to postpone governance.

Fix Article 50 transparency, AI literacy, prohibited-practice screening, GPAI exposure and system inventory now.
2027 readiness
For potential Annex III systems, use the extra time for classification, governance ownership, risk management, documentation, data governance, human oversight and vendor evidence.
2028 product systems
Coordinate AI Act preparation with the underlying product/safety regulatory framework and conformity-assessment pathway.
Continuous monitoring
Track guidelines, codes, standards, Commission implementation tools and competent-authority practice rather than treating the Regulation as a static one-time checklist.
